Henry Purcell - Dido and Aeneas

« back

10.02.2017, 7pm
Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow (Zwierzyniecka 1)

: 1,5 hour, 1 break

One of the most important works of English opera deserves to be in the program of the Opera Rara. As the first and only full-fledged opera by Henry Purcell, and not only a half-opera mask, combining spoken spectacle with musical episodes, Dido and Aeneas is the more exclusive. Nahum Tate dressed the threads taken from Virgil's Aeneid in a swift libretto, telling the tragic love of Dido and Aeneas, who are playthings in the hands of the envious Witch. The plot climaxes in one of the most beautiful, but also the saddest arias in the history of music - Dido's lament When I am laid in earth. The mannerist line of the soprano pushes the audience into the abyss of despair, and the subtle ostinato makes this march inevitable. Its direction will be ensured by outstanding soloists - sopranos Raffaella Milanesi and Stefanie True, baritone Richard Helm, tenor Iason Marmaras, as well as the ensemble La Risonanza, known for its sophisticated readings of the works of the Baroque era, conducted by Fabio Bonizzoni.
