Dumestre stages Lully’s tragedy in Provence
Add date: Wednesday, 11 March 2009
The famous French lutenist and conductor Vincent Dumestre, who will appear at the coming Misteria Paschalia Festival with his ensemble Le Poéme Harmonique and in June will be a guest of the Opera Rara series, has been very successful in France. In March he will show his astonishing staging of the opera Cadmus et Hermione by Jean Baptiste Lully at Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence, Théâtre de Caen and in Grand Théâtre in Luxemburg.
Lully’s little-known musical tragedy in 5 acts, as directed by Benjamin Lazar and prepared by Dumestre for the Parisian Opéra Comique, was extremely successful last year. The premiere earned the highest praise from critics and the DVD from this performance released several months later received many awards, including the prestigious Diapason d’Or. Le Monde described this staging as “total art”. The Baroque richness of the performance, excellent in its vocal and acting aspects owes its success to the wonderful cooperation of Vincent Dumestre and Benjamin Lazar, a director renowned for extraordinary stagings of Lully’s, Ramaeau’s and Purcell’s operas. The performance has been prepared in cooperation with Opéra Comique, Royaumont Founation, Centre of Baroque Music in Versaille, Opera in Rouen and Théâtre de Caen. Now the musicians and soloists of Le Poéme Harmonique, founded by Dumestre in 1997, will perform it on other renowned stages in Aix-en-Provence, in the north of France and at the National Theatre Luxembourg.
Claire Lefilliâtre will play the role of Hermione (Harmony) and Camille Poul will play the roles of L’Amour (Love) and Pallas. We will listen to both singers and Le Poéme Harmonique ensemble under the supervision of Vincent Dumestre in Krakow on 8th April. During the Misteria Paschalia Festival the artists will perform a programme composed of works by François Couperin. Dumestre’s ensemble will come back to Krakow after two months on 6th and 7th June to present one of its most famous performances: Le Bourgeois Gentleman, composed and written by Lully and Molière, and directed by Benjamin Lazar at Juliusz Słowacki Theatre within the framework of the Opera Rara series. This great event will be one of the highlights of the City's Festival celebrations.
